If you live in the U.S., this week is something to behold. Air/car/rail travel transports us to the infantilization of our youth, food beyond any human’s consumptive maximum is prepared, drink flows with increasing frequency, and we pray (regardless of religious preference or belief system) that a certain relative does not utter that one thing to set the holiday into a political maelstrom.

Despite those challenges, we take on the journey because of both named and unnamed gratitude. The gifts of smiles, warmth, and genuine selflessness. The relationships gained, friendships burgeoning, and memories of time spent with those we’ve lost. Perhaps a new opportunity or the end of a career. Or that achievement only you know of, with the quiet reward of attaining even the smallest of personal and professional goals.

Regardless of where you are, just know that we’re thankful for having you as an extended member of our family. Be safe, have fun, rest up, and let’s do this glorious thing called HR again next week. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

On Our Radar

Our ability to collect and analyze data has transformed over the past decade. This month, we’re highlighting two separate articles from some smart folks in Cambridge who are taking a long, hard look at these trends in work.

  • First, MIT Sloan Management Review examines the interplay between technology and leadership. It asks an interesting question: If we have more tools to manage employees than ever before, then what does management truly mean?
  • But how do we make sense of the data that we do use? The Harvard Business Review makes a great case on why business leaders need to take the time to understand the algorithms that shape our decision-making more and more, and why accountability is crucial to organizational success in the future.
